Star Trek: Prodigy Fans Are Trying to Save It Amid Cancellation, Removal From Paramount+

A new fan campaign is trying to save Star Trek: Prodigy from cancellation.

The animated Star Trek series was abruptly canceled just a few days ago – reversing Paramount+’s previous decision to give it a second season. Paramount+ also confirmed that existing episodes would be removed from its streaming service.

Now, fans of the show are banding together to try and save it.

The fan-made petition to save Star Trek: Prodigy already has almost 15,000 signatures.

“Paramount have long mistreated the loyalty and generosity of Trek fans, but this feels like a gut punch; the final nail in the coffin of goodwill,” reads the petition. “Money talks, but so do fans and we can’t let this beautiful show go without a fight!”

Back on social media, fans have flocked online to support the show with the hashtag #SaveProdigy.

Cancelling a show is one thing, but to actually remove it completely to prevent people from watching it?

The outpouring of support has clearly gotten through to some – including the show’s creators, Dan & Kevin Hageman, who thanked the fans for their comments.

“Star Trek has taught my brother and me to strive for a better future,” they said on Twitter. “While news of #StarTrekProdigy not returning to Paramount+ is disappointing… We have faith this show will be picked up by a new home to help grow our fervent fanbase and inspire the next generation of Star Trek fans. Our talented and passionate team of artists are working tirelessly to complete S2… And we are staying positive and hopeful that our amazing fans will get to see it soon! Janeway would never give up, so why would we? Let’s follow her orders and ‘Go Boldly.’”

Prodigy writer Chad Quandt, who changed his Twitter profile picture to a Save Prodigy image, said the campaign “not only lifts up the crew and unites the fandom but it helps the chances of the series finding a new home.”

Unfortunately, it looks as though it’s too late for the show to live long and prosper, as Paramount+ users report that it has disappeared from the service already.

Whether or not Star Trek fans can change Paramount’s mind remains to be seen.

IGN’s Star Trek: Prodigy Episode 1 review gave it 7/10 and said: “The new cast is fun with lots of appeal for younger viewers, and Ella Purnell’s Gwyn and Rylee Alazraqui’s Rok-Tahk are already stealing a lot of their scenes due to their nuanced and empathetic vocal work. The premiere sets the stage for a credible course for adventure that has the potential to grow into something special.
