Squid Game Season 2 Will Be ‘Bigger in Scale,’ Take Longer to Complete Than First Season

Like many sequels, Squid Game Season 2 is already promising to be bigger than what came before.

In an interview with Ilgan Sports (via Collider), Lee Jung-jae, who plays Squid Game’s lead character Seong Gi-hun. said that production for the upcoming season will take longer than Season 1.

“Squid Game 2 will begin filming in the summer and the filming will likely last for about 10 months. We were working on Season 1 for about 10 months as well, but that was with delays caused by COVID-19. But seeing as Season 2 will be bigger in scale, it will probably take longer to complete.”

We don’t know when Squid Game’s next season will hit Netflix, but given the timeline of Season 2’s film schedule, it’s possible the show could return to the streamer sometime in 2024.

The actor also teased that Season 2 will revolve around the theme of vengeance, stating that Gi-hun and the Front Man will likely be “the central figures of this next story.” This lines up with our prior knowledge of Season 2, when series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote, “Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming.”

Squid Game Season 2 has been confirmed three separate times, as Netflix moves to capitalize on its biggest series launch ever. We don’t know much about Season 2 outside of Gi-hun and The Front Man’s return, but given the end of Season 1, it seems Gi-hun wants to take down the brutal competition from the inside.

We were big fans of Squid Game when it premiered in 2021. In our review, we said, “Squid Game is one of the most exciting series to hit Netflix in some time.” The show also won our award for The Best TV Series of 2021 and The Best TV Episode of 2021.

The same praise can’t be awarded to Netflix’s Squid Game reality show, which was reportedly an “inhumane disaster” with multiple contestant injuries.
