Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has received rave reviews from critics and fans alike for its inventive visual style that builds upon the original 2018 film. The sequel features a myriad of animation styles showcasing various universes, and the film has sure set a new standard in the world of animation films. However, that standard hasn’t come easy, as a new report reveals the amount of backbreaking work required for the film to be completed on.
The report reveals the dire working conditions that animators and artists had to adjust to while working on the film. This led to the exit of 100 people before the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in early June.
The film was originally meant to be a single release, before it was split into Part 1 and Part 2. Following the release of Part 1 in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, fans have shifted their focus towards Part 2 in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which has a release date of March 29, 2024.
However, artists who have worked on the sequel believe that the Spider-Verse threequel won’t make its release date. In the aforementioned Vulture report, veteran artist Stephen (fake name, obviously!) claimed that “there’s no way” Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released in March 2024.
Stephen also commented on the reports about both the sequel and threequel being worked on together. “There’s been progress on the pre-production side of things,” he noted. “But as far as the production side goes, the only progress that’s been made on the third one is any exploration or tests that were done before the movie was split into two parts.”
With most of the focus going towards Across the Spider-Verse until its release a few weeks ago, it seems like Beyond the Spider-Verse has barely been touched by the people working on the series.
In the end, while Sony has yet to reveal any postponements for Beyond the Spider-Verse, fans should probably brace for some bad news, as several rumours suggest that the threequel could arrive in 2025 or later.
