Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Has the Third Best Opening Weekend for a Spidey Film

The Spider-Verse is well and truly thriving following the release of the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The long-awaited sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sees Miles Morales meeting new Spider-People from the multiverse. This includes characters like Spider-Punk, Spider-Man: India, Spider-Man 2099, Scarlet Spider, and more.

The film opened in theatres across India on June 1, and the rest of the world on June 2. Fans and critics had huge expectations due to the acclaim surrounding the 2018 film. Furthermore, the trailers and promotional material for the sequel confirmed that the film will be quite the joyride.

And the marketing seems to have paid off, as audiences towards the theatres to watch the film. According to Deadline, the film garnered $120.5 million in its opening weekend in North America. This makes it the second biggest opening for a film in 2023, behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $146.3 million.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also ranks ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s $118.4M, which makes the sequel the biggest summer release so far. It will be interesting to see where the film once stands once blockbusters like The Flash, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and more, drop.

To top it all off, the film also grabbed the third spot in the best opening weekend box office performances for a Spider-Man film. The 2023 blockbuster only lags behind hits like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man 3, which earned $260.1 million and $151.1 million, respectively.
