Spoiler alert: This article contains minor spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the animated superhero movie sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was a huge success for Sony. Interestingly, the movie had its ending changed only six weeks before the global release in June 2023. Here are the changes made, as explained by the writers.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the writers of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, shared some important insights about the movie’s creation in the November 2023 issue of Empire Magazine, as reported by Screen Rant. Miller mentioned that they changed the ending to offer the audience “a bit more hope that help was on the way.” This change relates to the moment when Miles Morales got stuck in another dimension.
MIller added that Gwen Stacy alongside other friendly Spider-heroes, teaming up to rescue Miles, was a scene that was added six weeks ago. Spot, the main villain of this over-arching story, also had a scene added before the movie ended with a cliffhanger. Miles Morales’ story will be continued when Beyond the Spider-Verse releases in 2024.
Justin K. Thompson, one of the directors of Across the Spider-Verse (Kemp Powers and Joaquim Dos Santos being the other two) said during the interview that he was “really worried” about the ending because the movie “fell flat at the end.” He said that a screening prior to the movie’s launch helped the team come up with a strategy to “bring all these characters back together, and bring the Spot back.”
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was slated for a March 29, 2023, release date. However, Sony has delayed the movie indefinitely due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. It is available to watch on Netflix.
