Sony’s Next Controller May Feature Temperature Emulation

Sony PlayStation has been ahead in the wireless controller scene since they released the DualSense. Their latest wireless controller, paired with the PlayStation 5, provides players with levels of immersion that they never imagined before. This comes thanks to the new vibration, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and other enhancements that were made to the controller.

PlayStation upped its game by introducing the DualSense Edge, which is a professional console gaming controller that has been designed to give you the much required “edge” over the competition. Interested readers can check out our DualSense Edge review here.

Sony PlayStation does not wish to stop here though, as a new patent spotted by Exputer, shows that the company wants to take their controller game a notch further. This new patent hints towards a next-generation haptic feedback feature that PlayStation has under the works.

There are two patents, the first is about the controller being built on a sensor made by an elastically deformable membrane. Therefore, when the membrane will detect touch sensations from the user, it will end up deforming to output electric signals that will help perform dedicated functions. The hardness or the sharpness of the elastic membrane will change according to the game the player is playing.

Moreover, the membrane will also be capable of providing temperature feedback to the user thanks to the material it is made of. For example, the controllers elastic membrane will turn warm if they end up touching a hot object in their game and cool for something ice related. This feature will take place to a gel-like substance in the membrane which will be easily be able to switch between temperatures.

At the moment, Sony has only filed a patent for it and there is a long way to go before we see this kind of a controller arrive on the market. When the temperature controller does arrive for the general public, it will surely bring levels of immersion that have never been seen before in gaming. Hopefully PlayStation is also able to bring this technology over to its virtual reality side of things too.
