Should yoga be made a mandatory part of the curriculum post the pandemic? – Times of India

Improves focus

The pandemic has forced students to spend extended hours on digital media which makes them a distracted lot. When they open one screen for an online class, there are three others that are claiming their attention. This is taking a toll on their concentration levels and their ability to do one thing at a time. Through Yoga and wellness techniques involving
pranayams and limb movement, they can be taught to focus their energies for better concentration. With the world endorsing Yoga, we have no reasons to be apologetic about this traditional wisdom and its inclusion in our curriculum and wellness programmes. Yoga in the online format maybe a challenge, but it can be initiated before the resumption of physical classes.

Increasing scope

Yoga can bring in a sense of unity among the youth as it highlights the inherent synergy among all living beings. Both theory and practice of yoga should be included in the curriculum at all levels, for students to consciously imbibe its benefits. As an integral part of the curriculum, yoga can motivate them to pursue courses and careers in yogic disciplines both in India and abroad. It is not just a collection of exercises but an art and science that can boost collaboration and problem-solving skills, so essential in present-day workplaces. It makes students naturally inclined towards healthy living practices, sustainable development and environment protection, all of which have become buzzwords, but are increasingly relevant.

Teaches life skills

With the stress-induced times that we live in, Yoga is essential to maintain solid physical and mental health. While our education system is centered on building the intellectual side of an individual, there remains paucity in directing the power of education to create better humans. And this is where yoga steps in. The intrinsic energy of Yoga helps one live in the moment which beats stress and anxiety. When we interweave education with Yoga, we teach students to appreciate things more deeply and live mindfully. Yoga is all about improving the quality of life and when integrated into the curriculum can teach life skills in our academic system.

Enhances academic performance

Yoga as a fitness programme should be taught to all the students as a compulsory part of the curriculum. Studies have shown that sustained yoga practice has increased attention spans, reduced stress, improved academic performance and social interactions in school children. They exhibit a higher self-esteem and confidence under its influence. Students also have better emotional resilience and become more centered and calm. School days are the best time to learn and practice Yoga since children have supple bodies which will easily develop strength and endurance.
