Secret Invasion: Will There Be A Second Season?

Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for Secret InvasionMarvel’s Secret Invasion had a short run on Disney Plus within six episodes, matching the count of last year’s shows Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and Loki season 1, but the narrative was neatly wrapped within this perimeter despite the season finale being somewhat predictable.

With episode 6, titled Home, leaving the door open to more encounters with G’iah, Sonya, and the Furys in space, fans want to know if the spy thriller will continue in its streaming capacity. We reveal if Secret Invasion will get a second season.

Will There Be A Second Season Of Secret Invasion?

Secret Invasion episode 4 release date and time

No, Secret Invasion will not be getting a second season on Disney Plus, or anywhere for that matter, as the series was previously billed as a miniseries. Shows under the miniseries or limited series label are almost always confined to one season, usually because it is adapting the source material, like a book or real-life event, that has a limit to its material. There have been a few exceptions to this rule over the years, including Marvel’s Moon Knight series, which is confirmed to be producing a second season despite being originally billed as a limited series.

In Secret Invasion’s case, the show was designed to establish that the Skrulls had been secretly planning to invade Earth for a number of years, and now that the cat’s out of the bag, there’s little room to expand on that front that doesn’t involve a spin-off of President Ritson’s (Dermot Mulroney) team tracking down Skrulls across the planet—not the most exciting premise on paper.

Instead, Secret Invasion’s finale established a number of plot points going forward for other projects to explore: Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) and Varra’s (Charlayne Woodard) involvement in the Kree/Skrull peace summit, Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman) and G’iah’s (Emilia Clarke) partnership to combat the President’s attack on the Skrull race, and Colonel Rhodes’ (Don Cheadle) recovery after realizing he’s been out of the game for a long time.

Armor Wars Will Be A Secret Invasion Sequel

Instead of a second season of Secret Invasion, the upcoming Armor Wars movie will serve as a direct sequel to the Disney Plus show, and will likely follow Rhodey’s road to recovery after being held captive by the Skrulls for nearly a decade—since Captain America: Civil War, to be precise.

Pinned to a Fall 2024 release window, Armor Wars is named after the 1987 seven-issue Iron Man comic arc by David Michelinie and Bob Layton, and the narrative will involve War Machine keeping Tony Stark’s tech away from the wrong people. Actor Don Cheadle previously stated that Tony’s death would play a significant part in the movie, which makes sense because Rhodey doesn’t know his friend died during the events of Avengers: Endgame. Armor Wars will likely deal with Rhodey’s grief surrounding Tony’s death, which may warrant a visit from Pepper Potts to explain.

The movie is also rumored to see the return of Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart, after her debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and a number of characters from the Iron Man trilogy are also expected to make a return, including Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer. Since Rhodey and Fury were at odds in Secret Invasion, it would also make sense for the pair to reconcile within this project.

The Marvels Will Also Continue Secret Invasion’s Narrative

Since Armor Wars is not expected until next year—or possibly later because of the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes—there’s another project that will continue Secret Invasion’s narrative in the immediate future. The Marvels is due to release on November 10, 2023, and the Disney Plus series may have already set up a major plot point.

The season finale of Secret Invasion saw Fury leaving Earth to return to S.A.B.E.R., although this time, he took his Skrull wife, Varra, with him. Fury explained that the Kree were open to peace talks with the Skrulls—even though a past war with the Kree was the very thing that drove the Skrulls from their home to Earth—and he asked Varra for her help navigating the peace summit. There’s a good chance this plot point will be picked up in The Marvels, with Carol Danvers being a human/Kree hybrid and having a direct connection to the Skrulls, alongside the arrival of villain Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), who is also Kree.

The Marvels is thought to take place before and after the events of Secret Invasion. Therefore, we may get to see more of Fury’s time on the space station before he came back to Earth and perhaps learn more about why he disappeared there in the first place. We already know the Blip took a toll on Fury, and since G’iah delivered Fury’s heart-to-heart with Gravik while she was impersonating him in the Secret Invasion finale, it would be good to hear the words from the real Fury instead.
