Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for Secret Invasion episode 4
Since the premiere of Marvel’s Secret Invasion served Maria Hill’s death before the credits rolled, viewers should have been prepared for another character’s downfall, but it was nonetheless shocking.
Sitting on a cliffhanger for a week is tough going, and fans were hopeful that G’iah would reconnect with her father, Talos, and work against Gravik’s heinous plan. We explain if G’iah is alive during the events of episode 4.
Secret Invasion Episode 3 Recap
After lying through her teeth to Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) about who gave up the location of the Skrulls’ safehouse, G’iah (Emilia Clarke) knew she was getting into hot water and was on the edge of being found out as the mole. Despite this intensity, G’iah immediately helped Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) find Robert Fairbanks’ (David Bark-Jones) code to terminate the missile strike being prepared by the submarine, knocking a few guards out in the process.
After delivering the code, her father told her to get out of Gravik’s power plant and make a run for it. After stealing a motorbike and making her way to the security gate, G’iah was met by Gravik, waiting for her in a car. It was then revealed that Gravik orchestrated the entire submarine strike in order to find out who the mole was in his ranks, and G’iah gave herself up on a silver platter.
Gravik tells G’iah to turn around before he shoots her, but she wants him to look at her while he kills her, and he proceeds to shoot her in the chest anyway. This causes G’iah to fall and turn into her Skrull form after being injured, and the episode concludes with fans believing she had died mid-season.
Is G’iah Alive In Episode 4?
Yes, G’iah is alive in Secret Invasion episode 4, titled Beloved, as we’re quickly shown after the Marvel title screen that she survived her injury and escaped Gravik’s base. Let us explain.
As we see G’iah lying on the ground from last week’s conclusion, we’re also shown a flashback of G’iah perusing the research on Dalton’s computer and operating Gravik’s secret machine to merge the Skrulls’ DNA with other creatures. G’iah then enters the machine to turn herself into a Super Skrull, and we cut back to G’iah lying on the ground as her injury begins to heal. It’s clear from her recovery that she’s merged her DNA with Extremis’ powers, the same power we saw Gravik in possession of after Talos stabbed his hand.
After recovering from her injuries, G’iah leaves the base unharmed and arranges to meet Talos on a park bench to establish the next plan of action. Glad to have his daughter back in his camp, Talos reveals a bargaining chip between the Skrulls and President Ritson that will come into effect after Talos and Fury save the President from Gravik’s upcoming attack, which will hopefully allow their race to continue living on Earth. However, G’iah wants to be able to live in her own skin without hiding as a human and walks away from the conversation.
Unbeknownst to G’iah, this would be the final conversation she has with her father, as the shootout with Gravik later claims his life. Whilst trying to rescue Ritson from an overturned car, Talos is shot and later stabbed by Gravik, and Fury is forced to leave him there on the field while he gets the President to safety.
Does G’iah Die In Marvel Comics?
No, G’iah does not die in the Marvel Comics source material, and she is currently residing within the Earth-616 reality after making her first appearance in Meet the Skrulls #1, released back in March 2019.
In the comics, G’iah is known as a special agent within the Skrull Empire who decided to breed with a fellow agent and Skrull, Klrr, in order to distance themselves from the offspring on their home planet who became Warskrulls. The couple posed under the aliases of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts on Earth, with G’iah also assuming the alias of Gloria Warner, and they had three daughters together whilst infiltrating the government in order to invade Earth at a future date–sound familiar?
However, the family’s plan was put on hold when one of their daughters, Ivy, was captured and killed by Project Blossom–a secret organization terminating undercover Skrull agents. The family went after the organization, and their other daughter, Alice, killed one of the agents, which allowed Klrr to infiltrate them more easily by assuming the felled agent’s identity. At this point, G’iah was sickened at how her family had turned out.
After Klrr was betrayed and killed by another Skrull agent, Moloth, G’iah fought him, and he was eventually killed by Alice, and the downfall of Project Blossom followed. Wanting to avenge Klrr, G’iah planned to take down the remaining Project Blossom agents until a Kree member of the organization tried to blow her and her family up. G’iah then went after the agent and his family but decided to let them live in the end, unable to kill them.
