GUWAHATI: The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) on Saturday declared the results of higher secondary final examination 2021 (Special), conducted for the students who were dissatisfied with the formula-based evaluation in the absence of offline board exams this year due to Covid-19. The highest 68.67% students passed in science followed by 59.15% in commerce and 58.24% in arts.
Though there was resentment among a section of students at the cancellation of the offline exams this year, only 2,082 applied for the special exam conducted on the lines of the board exam last month. However, 1,414 students finally appeared. In the arts section, the highest 874 students sat for the test. In science and commerce, 466 and 71 students appeared respectively. In the vocational stream, only three candidates appeared for the exam, and of them only one passed with 33.33%.
The pass percentage plummeted in all the three streams. In 2020, in the science stream, the pass percentage had improved to 88.06. The pass percentage in arts and commerce had recorded a rise of 78.28% and 88.18% respectively. In science and arts, last year’s performance was the best in the previous four years, while in commerce the highest pass percentage of the last decade was recorded.
The controller of examinations at AHSEC, Pankaj Borthakur, said a fair chance was given to the students to prove their mettle. Though a large number of the students who took the special test failed in the formula-based evaluation, many attempted to improve their performance. “The previous result declared a few months ago was based on the method adopted by the alternative evaluation committee. But today’s result was based on a written test and proper evaluation,” said Borthakur.
The special exam was held after the state recorded a significant improvement in the Covid situation. Borthakur said an all out effort was made to declare the results within a month. “We were ready to conduct the exam for even one lakh students. But the dissatisfaction level was very low as reflected by the low turnout,” he added.
Even though regular classes started in the state’s colleges several weeks ago, AHSEC sources said the higher education department will now have to find a way to accommodate the successful students who were not enrolled due to various reasons. “We are not saying the successful students would lose an academic year. They should join the undergraduate courses this year itself,” an AHSEC official said.
He added that some of the meritorious students managed to improve their performance significantly in the offline test. “Some of the students got nearly 94% aggregate marks, which has been quite satisfactory,” the official said.
