samsung: OnePlus’ 2021 woes seem to be now Samsung’s troubles – Times of India

Samsung has been accused of throttling or limiting the performance of some apps. According to Twitter user @GaryeonHan and some Samsung users in Korea, Samsung has installed a system app called Game Optimizing Service (GOS) in its smartphones that limits the performance of some apps. System app is the default app in the smartphone and cannot be removed. GaryeonHan has published a long thread on Twitter detailing the same. Here are the tweets:
“Samsung created an app called GOS and used the app to limit game performance, making the gaming experience worse. However, according to what the Korean community found out today, Samsung confirmed that it has put performance limits on more than 10,000 apps…”
“Samsung employees are also criticizing this as bad behaviour, referring to Volkswagen’s Dieselgate. Accordingly, Samsung has launched an investigation, and there are rumors that Samsung’s Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong is also moving.”
The tweet also shares the list of the 10,000 apps that are apparently being throttled by Samsung via GOS.

The claim suggests that instead of optimising the game’s performance, Samsung is using this tool to limit the performance of non-gaming apps which are a part of Game Optimising Service list. A YouTuber has also showed the same, where he renamed the 3D mark app to trick GOS service into thinking that the app is a part of GOS.
Meanwhile, the list revealed by the community forum includes both gaming as well as other apps like Instagram, Microsoft Office apps, TikTok, Netflix, Google, YouTube etc. The list also includes some of the Samsung’s own apps like Samsung Pay, Secure Folders and more. The important thing to note is that the list does not include any benchmarking apps like 3D Mark, Antutu, etc.
So far, there’s no clarity on the Samsung smartphones that come with this GOS app. Times of India-Gadgets Now did not find the app in Galaxy S22 series phones. A report in Naver claims that Samsung has started investigating in the issue and may make an official statement soon. We also did not find the app in Samsung Galaxy Fold device.
OnePlus too faced similar accusation in 2021. The smartphone vendor was found throttling some popular Android apps. OnePlus justified the decision by saying that it was optimizing the apps to better manage battery life and heating issues.
