On July 26, Old School RuneScape players witnessed the launch of Desert Treasure 2 – The Fallen Empire, marking the MMO’s first Grandmaster quest since 2019. The sequel to the 2005 quest, Desert Treasure 2 immerses players in the depths of the Kharidian Desert as they explore a vault linked to the Zarosian empire, facing the Mahjarrat. Eurogamer was first to report.
Old School RuneScape is known for its branching lore which deviates from its modern counterpart due to its archives being based on 2007 data. Consequently, quests released after that date do not exist in Old School RuneScape, granting developers the freedom to craft distinct stories and explore overlapping narratives.
It’s great to see many of you diving into to the fun after completing Desert Treasure II!
We’ve seen speculation that the ring attachments aren’t dropping. Before it snowballs into a mystery bigger than the Mahjarrat, we’d like to confirm one thing.
They can drop. We checked.— Old School RuneScape (@OldSchoolRS) July 26, 2023
The Mahjarrat series is one such overlapping storyline, making a return to Old School RuneScape after a long absence. Previously, these lich-like beings have been absent until this year. They were prominent characters in RuneScape 3, featuring in quests like While Guthix Sleeps and Ritual of the Mahjarrat. However, Old School RuneScape players experienced their reintroduction earlier this year with Secrets of the North. Desert Treasure 2 – The Fallen Empire is expected to further delve into the world of Old School’s Mahjarrat and bring their narratives to the forefront of the game.
As a Grandmaster quest, Desert Treasure 2 demands players to meet specific level requirements and complete preceding quests before embarking on the journey. The quest features four bosses, testing players’ combat prowess. Participants are advised to equip themselves with gear and supplies like summer pies or manta rays, as this journey will demand resilience.
Conquering these bosses rewards players with a new component called a Vestige, which can be combined with an Icon for a Fremennik Ring to create one of four new rings. These rings offer stat boosts for melee, magic, or range, surpassing the capabilities of the Fremennik Rings. While obtaining a Vestige may prove challenging, the Old School RuneScape Twitter account has reassured players that the drops are attainable.
Old School RuneScape is available on PC and Mac, including via Steam, with a mobile version for iOS and Android, allowing players to experience this quest on various platforms.
