Ranji Trophy 2022: Karnataka skipper Manish Pandey rues batting fiasco | Cricket News – Times of India

BENGALURU: Karnataka skipper Manish Pandey looked heartbroken after his team’s five-wicket loss to Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The team’s famed batting line-up fell short and the combined experience of four of their top-order batsmen – Mayank Agarwal, Manish Pandey, Karun Nair and R Samarth — and the over 22,000 first-class runs they have scored counted for little.
“It is disappointing from a batting point of view, as a batsman myself and the batting group. The second innings — this was not among the best batting performances we had of late. But yesterday (Tuesday) was not a day we want to remember. We should have taken our time and seen the overs through. We cannot repeat the same mistake again,” the skipper reasoned.
Pandey also revealed that the manner in which they lost hurt more than the defeat itself. “We had plans, we have so many senior batters, but a collapse like this hurts us. Our batters fell like a deck of cards, when one senior batter should have taken it upon himself to take us to safety. All of us senior batters have to step up our game.”
Compared to the other pacers, spearhead Ronit More (10 overs) was under-bowled, while Vyshak Vijaykumar bowled 17 overs and Vidwath Kaverappa 13.2.
“Ronit finished the first spell, and he wanted one end (media end). I didn’t want to force him to bowl from the other end because there was a bit of spin. I wanted to keep one end for a spinner and the other for a pacer. As a senior bowler he should have taken responsibility of bowling from the other end. But as a captain I have to give the bowlers what they ask for,” he said.
About the spinners, head coach Yere Goud said, “Both of them tried their best but they couldn’t get the breakthrough. But yes, some more responsibility and some more wickets from them could have helped the side.”
