HIGHLIGHTS

  • Manchester City moved to the 2nd spot, are 3 points behind leaders Chelsea
  • Goals from Sterling, Rodri and Silva did the job for Pep Guardiola’s men
  • City will next face PSG in a crucial Champions League match mid-week

Defending champions Manchester City came with a strong response to title rivals Chelsea and Liverpool as they hammered Everton 3-0 in a Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Goals from Raheem Sterling, Rodri and Bernardo Silva helped Pep Guardiola’s men come up with a commanding performance to resume their league campaign after the international break.

Raheem Sterling put City ahead, a minute before the break, side-footing home after a magnificent ball, struck with the outside of his foot, by full back Joao Cancelo. Cancelo is proving to be City’s biggest creative threat at the moment. Before the latest international break, he set up three goals in a Champions League match and another two a few days later in the Manchester derby.

Rodri made it 2-0 with a thundering long-distance strike that whistled past Everton keeper Jordan Pickford. Sterling missed a great chance to end the contest but mis-controlled the ball in front of goal after a low cross from Riyad Mahrez.

Cole Palmer, the 19-year-old making his first Premier League start, had set Mahrez through for that opportunity and his blocked shot was pounced on by Bernardo Silva who calmly slotted home the third.

Chelsea are on top of the Premier League table with 29 points from 12 matches while Manchester City have 25, 1 more than Liverpool who hammered Arsenal on Saturday.

City were without their star playmaker Kevin de Bruyne who had contracted the coronavirus during the international break. They will next face Paris Saint-Germain in a much-anticipated Champions League clash mid-week for which also they will miss de Bruyne who is in a 10-day isolation period.
