Premier League: Draw vs Chelsea not enough but it’s a big point for Manchester United, says David de Gea

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea said the Premier League side is not going to be happy with draws but the point won at Stamford Bridge against league leaders Chelsea is a big one, considering their situation in the new league season.

Manchester United, in what caretaker manager Michael Carrick’s first game in charge in the league, held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw after going 1-0 up early in the second half. A Jorginho error at the backline saw Jadon Sancho give Manchester United the lead as the new recruit scored for the first time in the league and his second successful goal.

United were on course for their second win in two games under Carrick, who steered them to a 2-0 Champions League win over Villarreal in midweek after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking. However, Chelsea drew level 19 minutes later when Jorginho, who was at fault for United’s opener, converted a penalty after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was adjudged to have fouled Thiago Silva.

Chelsea kept creating chances and dominated the proceedings at Stamford Bridge but Thomas Tuchel’s side lacked the potency in the final third with the likes of Timo Werner missing a couple of easy chances to give the hosts the lead.

“It is not enough to draw, but at the moment, the way we are it’s a big point,” de Gea said.

“In the last games we were conceding three or four goals, now we conceded one from a penalty and got a clean sheet against Villarreal, so I think we are improving.

“But this is two games, we need to show in the games that are coming, like Arsenal — a big game again. Let’s keep going, keep focused.”

Will Rangnick take over before the Arsenal game?

Manchester United will next face Arsenal on Friday but it will be interesting to see if Carrick remains the caretaker manager or whether Ralf Rangnick, who is due to take over as interim manager until the end of the season, will have arrived at Old Trafford by then.

“As of now I haven’t got any more news for you,” Carrick, a former United midfielder said. “I was purely focused on the game. I am sure I will be updated and then see what happens in the next few days.”
