Persona 2 Japanese DLC Receives English Fan Translation After 12 Years

Highlights

  • Persona 2: Innocent Sin receives a fan translation patch for extra content only available in the Japanese PSP version, including side stories written by different authors and a quest maker feature.
  • The translation mod only covers the side stories and does not add the quest maker or other non-story related content. Players need to apply the patch to an ISO form of the game and install it on a compatible system.
  • The quests included in the patch range from a 3-part series related to the main story, written by main scenario writer Tadashi Satomi, to lighter and ‘unofficial’ quests written by other staff members. The game’s official sequel, Eternal Punishment, also has a fan translation available.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin, the PSP version of the original PSX-only Persona 2, has received a fan translation patch for the extra content available only on the Innocent Sin version.

Innocent Sin was an updated version of Persona 2, just like Persona 5 and its Royal version. It included extra content like an updated interface, new character portraits, an improved battle system, as well as several side stories written by different authors and a quest maker feature, both of which remained exclusive to the Japanese PSP version. The English version omitted the Quest Maker feature and the extra quests when it was released in the West.

The fan translation mod only provides translation for the side stories. It does not add the Quest Maker feature to the English PSP version or any other non-story related content. Needless to say, the game is not officially available in any form, so players will have to apply the patch to an ISO form of the game and install it on a PSP or a system that can run homebrew versions of PSP games. All the steps are listed on the modding site Gamebanana.

Fortunately, this mod adds a Farming EXP quest that was a byproduct of Japanese fans getting creative with the Quest Maker feature to grind EXP. This quest will allow players to grind their entire party to level 99 without much effort and without having to defeat the level 99 Alice (the old way of grinding in Innocent Sin).

As for what the quests are actually about, according to the translation team, there is a 3-part quest series related to the main story. This series of quests take place before the main story of Persona 2 begins and features some of the characters from the first Persona game. In addition, these quests are specifically written by main scenario writer Tadashi Satomi, further adding weight to their narrative importance.

The other quests are said to be more light-hearted and ‘unofficial’ in a way, as they were written by other staff members and have promotions for other unrelated products.

Persona 2 also has an official sequel called Eternal Punishment. This sequel was only localized for the PSX, and the upgraded PSP version was never localized. However, this Japanese PSP version already has a fan translation thanks to the dedication of the fans, and for the first time we can say that the entire Persona 2 duology is available in English from a story telling perspective.
