Peaky Blinders Slams Ron DeSantis Campaign for Using Tommy Shelby Without Permission

Even Peaky Blinders is feuding with Ron DeSantis’ campaign now.

The team behind the British crime drama issued a strongly worded statement today after a Twitter account for DeSantis’ presidential campaign posted a homophobic ad using some brief footage from the show. The bizarre video attacks former President Donald Trump for his statements in support of LGBTQ+ citizens and touts DeSantis’ own legislative attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.

As it shows off headlines and pundits that are critical of DeSantis, it also includes shots of various pop culture figures, including Brad Pitt as Achilles in Troy, Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street, and Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders. The team behind the latter strongly denounced the use of Murphy, saying that the footage was obtained without their permission.

“On behalf of the partners of Peaky Blinders – [show creator] Steven Knight, Cillian Murphy, Caryn Mandabach Productions, Tiger Aspect Productions, and Banijay Rights – we confirm the footage of Tommy Shelby’s character used within the video posted by Ron DeDantis’ campaign was obtained without permission or official license,” reads the statement. “We do not support nor endorse the video’s narrative and strongly disapprove of the use of the content in this manner.”

The ad drew criticism even within the GOP as well, with the largest organization of LGBTQ+ Republicans calling it “divisive and desperate” as the 2024 presidential election draws nearer.

DeSantis has already had his fair share of run-ins with the entertainment industry, most notably his public battle with Disney. The company recently filed a First Amendment lawsuit against the Florida governor for his “targeted campaign of government retaliation” over Disney’s opposition to his controversial “Don’t Say Gay” legislation.
