Paprika, the classic anime film by Satoshi Kon, is going to air in India on the &PrivéHD TV channel. Paprika will be broadcasted on March 24 at 9 PM, with repeats running all week until next Thursday (March 30).
Paprika tells the story of a terrorist who gains access of a device called the DC Mini, which allows people to share their dreams with others by recording them. He misuses this device to give nightmares to people. Atsuko Chiba, who is a research psychologist, takes the alter-ego of dream detective Paprika to investigate these cases of strange dreams. The film deals with mature themes such as identity and perception of humans, what effects technology has on society, as well as how mental health issues and traumatic experiences can impact one’s psyche.
The 2006 film is based on the 1993 novel of the same name by Japanese author Yasutaka Tsutsui. It was anime auteur Satoshi Kon’s final film before his death in 2010. Kon is known for directing influential anime films such as Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, as well as for directing the anime series Paranoia Agent. Kon’s adaptation of the Paprika novel is mostly true to the source material, with some minor changes to fit the large story into a film format.
Many directors from around the world have been influenced by Kon’s style of filmmaking. Darren Aronofsky, who made the psychological drama film Requiem for a Dream, was heavily inspired by Kon’s Perfect Blue.
Even Christopher Nolan’s Inception has many similarities to Paprika. “Christopher Nolan directed Inception four years after Paprika’s story of a dream detective travelling through the subconsciousness of others’ dreams. Like Aronofsky, Nolan drew upon famous scenery of Paprika, namely, the ever-stretching long hallway where Toshimi witnesses a murder, and the visual effect of the dream world shattering like glass,” IGN noted.
Paprika is also set to get a live-action series by Cathy Yan, who is known for directing Dead Pigs and Birds of Prey. She will serve as the executive producer and director of a live-action series for Amazon Studios and Hivemind.
