The two biggest films of 2023 released this weekend, and they have managed to create waves in the domestic as well as international box office. Barbie and Oppenheimer, the two films that have been subject to a boat load of memes and hype, are finally out and the numbers these movies have managed to record in the box office are impressive. Barbie has managed to rake in a whopping $155 million at the domestic box office and an additional $182 million at the international box office, bringing the total to $337 million, according to a report by Variety. Oppenheimer, on the other hand, has fallen a little shy against its weekend competitor, bringing in $80.5 million on its opening weekend at the domestic box office and other $93.7 million internationally, bringing its total to $174 million.
Barbie has managed to bring in several laurels since release, recording the biggest opening weekend of 2023, beating the likes of Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse. It has also become the biggest opening weekend for a film with a woman director, beating the likes of Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman. Furthermore, it is also marked the biggest opening weekend for a non-superhero film.
Oppenheimer, on the other hand, went on to break one of Nolan’s personal records. The film about “The father of the atomic bomb” has recorded the best non-Batman opening weekend for Christopher Nolan. Moreover, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning – Part One took third place this weekend, and Sound of Freedom came in fourth.
