HYDERABAD: With the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) cancelling the class 12 examinations, the state too might follow suit and cancel intermediate second-year examinations, which have already been postponed multiple times.
The state might consider intermediate first-year marks to give scores to second-year students.
“There is no other option except to cancel the exams. Unofficially, the state had already made up its mind to cancel the exam and grade students based on first-year marks,” said P Madhusudan Reddy, president, Telangana State Junior Lecturers Forum.
Reddy said that in the recent meeting conducted with the various state boards and CBSE about examinations, Telangana was among those states which was willing to follow in CBSE’s footsteps. “The state can’t risk conducting exams amid pandemic. Neither can they hold them in online mode or conduct only objective type paper. So, as decided earlier, they will go with CBSE’s decision,” he added.
Last year, as many as 3,74,492 candidates appeared for the intermediate second-year exams. Of which, 2,60,703 cleared the test. When it comes to first years, 2,63,463 candidates cleared the exam with an overall pass percentage of 61.07%. Those students who failed to clear the exams were also promoted subsequently as the situation was not favourable to conduct advanced supplementary exams amid pandemic.
Parents, meanwhile, said that a decision should be made at the earliest so that students can relax and stop thinking about exams.
“Students are worried about appearing for intermediate exams amid pandemic. If they are cancelled, they can at least think about competitive exams or take admission in undergraduate courses,” said Srinivas A, whose son is in intermediate second year.
The Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE), meanwhile, said that they will be sending in their proposal in the next two to three days to the state. “We’re obtaining the status of various states’ responses. We’ll be placing different possibilities in front of the state government for a decision,” said Syed Omer Jaleel, secretary and commissioner, TSBIE.
Last week, the board said that it is planning to conduct exams in mid-July by reducing the duration of the exam by half and students will be asked to attempt only 50% of the questions. However, in the current situation, conducting exams looks unlikely.
