Warning: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi!
Obi-Wan Kenobi just ended with an impressive cameo from a Star Wars legend.
Of course, there have been nods and winks throughout the series. We’ve seen Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru on Tatooine while a young Princess Leia evades the Empire elsewhere. There was even a nod to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for fans of the video game.
But now, a bona fide Star Wars legend has returned… and they’ve revealed why.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liam Neeson explained why he returned as legendary Jedi master, Qui-Gon Jinn.
“I certainly didn’t want anyone else playing Qui-Gon Jinn, and I wanted to show my respect for George [Lucas] and that mythical world that he created,” he said. “Plus, Ewan [McGregor] is a pal, and I loved working with him during The Phantom Menace 25 years ago.”
Qui-Gon returns as a Force ghost in the final moments of the series, which sees his former Padawan, Obi-Wan, communing with him in the deserts of Tatooine.
Before that, the last we saw of Qui-Gon was in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, where the Jedi master was slain in battle by Darth Maul.
And it sounds as though Neeson is still fond of his prequel appearance.
“I like [Phantom Menace],” he told SiriusXM in 2020. “I am proud of it and proud to have been a part of it. I got to be a Jedi. I got to play with those wonderful lightsabers and stuff. It was terrific, it really was.”
It’s certainly great to see the former Jedi master back on our screens… and if Season 2 does go ahead, perhaps we’ll see even more of him.
Obi-Wan Kenobi stars Ewan McGregor as the titular Jedi alongside Benny Safdie, Joel Edgerton, Rupert Friend, Moses Ingram, Sung Kang, and Hayden Christensen.
Deborah Chow directed the series based on scripts by Joby Harold, Andrew Stanton, Hannah Friedman, Hossein Amini, and Stuart Beattie.
