Nintendo has confirmed that it has no plans to introduce new hardware for its worldwide user base until next year.
The revelation comes from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa during the company’s recent financial results release. Despite dwindling sales for its iconic Nintendo Switch console, Furukawa’s comments confirm that the Japanese gaming giant intends to release its successor until 2024.
The Nintendo president claimed that the company plans on keeping the Switch boat steady in its seventh year (via Bloomberg). “Sustaining the Switch’s sales momentum will be difficult in its seventh year,” said Furukawa during the earnings call. “Our goal of selling 15 million units this fiscal year is a bit of stretch. But we will do our best to bolster demand going into the holiday season so that we can achieve the goal.”
Sales for the Switch have been down once again. According to the financial results, Nintendo sold 17.97 million units of hardware in FY-2023, compared to 23.06 million units in FY-2022. This is a drop of over 22% percent.
Nintendo has forecasted that it will continue to see a downturn in sales for the Switch, even with the release of high-profile games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Despite the dwindling sales, the Switch continues to be one of the highest selling consoles of all time, as Nintendo confirmed the device breaking the 125 million sales mark.
