Kiwi all-rounder Mitchell McClenaghan said that New Zealand are playing a “meaningless” series that started just 72 hours after they played in the T20 World Cup final and were facing a home team who have had far more rest than them after a fan taunted him on the team’s loss.

HIGHLIGHTS
- The ongoing three-match series started on November 17
- The final of the T20 World Cup was played in the UAE on November 15
- A number of key players from both teams have sat out the series
New Zealand’s loss to India has come in a “meaningless” series that has been crammed into five days and started just 72 hours after they played the T20 World Cup final, all-rounder Mitchell McClenaghan said on Twitter. McClenaghan also said in later tweets that he was only “joking” and would have loved to see New Zealand win the series.
India beat New Zealand by seven wickets on Friday, thus taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
“New Zealand lost series,” said a fan in a tweet that was made in reply to McClenaghan’s tweet in which he paid tribute to former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Friday.
“Did they? You mean in meaningless series 72 hours after a WC final defeat with 3 games in 5 days playing a team with 10 days rest in their home conditions?” said McClenaghan in response.

Fast bowler Tim Southee, standing in as New Zealand captain with Kane Williamson opting to sit out of the series, said that it has been a hectic schedule for the Kiwis. Southee is among players in the squad who also played the Indian Premier League before the T20 World Cup in the UAE.
“It’s been a hectic schedule on the back of the T20 World Cup, I just don’t think we adapted to the surface as well as we could have,” Southee said at the post-match conference.
The first match was played in Jaipur on Wednesday while the second was played in Ranchi on Friday. The final match of the series will now be played in Kolkata on Sunday.
