Jon Spaihts has been tapped to write Netflix’s live action Gears of War movie, the streaming platform announced today. Spaihts is known for writing 2016’s Doctor Strange, 2021’s Dune, and the upcoming Dune: Part 2. The writer also penned 2012’s Prometheus and 2016’s Passengers.
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” Spaihts wrote in a statement. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
After years of rumblings, a Gears of War movie was officially announced by Netflix last November. The streamer is partnering with Gears of War developer The Coalition to create a movie based on the video game franchise, as well as an adult animated series.
Now that the film has a writer, we’re one step closer to learning who will star in the Gears of War movie. One person that’s surely holding their breath more than anyone else is Dave Bautista, who has described Marcus Fenix as a “dream role.” After the movie was announced, Bautista even posted a video of himself in Gears of War armor, with the text, “I can’t make this any easier.”
Gears of War is just one Xbox property set to get a movie or television adaptation. We’ve previously seen the Halo TV series on Paramount+, and we’re still expecting movies or shows based on Minecraft, Fallout, and a lot more.
The news was first reported by Variety.
