The live-action My Hero Academia film officially has a home at Netflix, adding to the streaming platform’s growing list of anime and manga adaptations in the pipeline through a collaboration with Legendary Entertainment.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Netflix My Hero Academia screenplay comes from writer Joby Harold. Harold also served as both executive producer and writer on the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi and is currently penning the script for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
In 2018, Legendary Entertainment announced it acquired the rights to a live-action version of creator Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia manga. In addition to talent like Harold, Shinsuke Nato is on board as the film’s director. While this is Nato’s first English-language project debut, the director already has plenty of experience with live-action anime and manga films. His work includes adaptations like 2018’s Bleach, the Death Note: New Generation mini-series, Death Note: Light Up the New World, Inuyashiki, and Gantz: Perfect Answer.
The specifics around how the Netflix take on My Hero Academia will shape up aren’t clear just yet, but the shonen series already has plenty to work with. Since its initial release in 2014, Horikoshi has published over 350 chapters in Weekly Shonen Jump, and its anime began back in 2016. The series follows bullied high schooler Izuku Midoriya (Deku), born without superhero-like powers in a world where those abilities are the norm. After events leading him to acquire his own powers, Deku strikes out on world-saving adventures with other classmates.
In the wait for a real-life take on My Hero Academia, you can start on its anime series now. It’s one of the major titles added to Crunchyroll back in March and just made its season 6 debut last October. As the story heats up, IGN’s review of the latest from the My Hero anime said it “does a great job in presenting the stakes, introducing a new threat, and making sure we’re ready for all-out war.”
