My Happy Marriage is an anime with a lot of likable characters. While the story takes its time to thoughtfully explore the relationships of the main characters, it’s the rich character development that makes the show so rewarding to watch. We get to peel back the layers on each of them over time, growing to understand their unique motivations, weaknesses, and strengths.
It’s this patient approach to characterization that allows us to form meaningful connections with the characters. Even the minor characters are unique and add something special to the anime. This is why My Happy Marriage is doing great in the summer 2023 slate.

Hazuki Kudou
Hazuki Kudou is the older sister of Kiyoka Kudou. As the elder sibling, Hazuki often takes on a caring, protective role with Kiyoka, looking out for her younger sister’s wellbeing. Her compassion extends beyond just her immediate family, as Hazuki also provides support and guidance to Miyo.
She has a warm, approachable presence that makes those around her feel at ease confiding in her. Hazuki possesses a unique supernatural Gift that allows her to heal injuries and ailments through touch.

Kaya Saimori
Kaya Saimori is the younger step-sister of Miyo Saimori. As the second daughter of the noble Saimori family, Kaya was raised with privilege and taught to look down on Miyo as inferior. This fueled a cruel resentment in Kaya, who took sadistic pleasure in abusing Miyo despite her kind nature.
However, Kaya finally pushed her luck too far. Her schemes to steal Miyo’s handsome fiancé Kiyoka failed spectacularly. Thus, she was condemned to serve as a lowly servant – the very life she forced upon Miyo. Kaya is hands down one of the best-written villain characters because her downfall is so deliciously karmic.

Kouji Tatsuishi
His affection for Miyo runs deep, having been one of the few people to support her after the tragic death of her mother. However, when it comes time to act on these ambitions, Kouji’s loyalty to his own family wins out. Despite his dreams of marrying Miyo, he accepts his father’s wishes that he instead marry Kaya.
Kouji is spineless but at least he continues to stand by Miyo’s side and look out for her best interests. He also acknowledged Kiyoka Kudou after Miyo began to be happier and smile again. So Kouji’s care for her supersedes his own romantic interests.

Keiko
Keiko is the longtime owner of Suzushimaya Kimonon Shop, a small but respected business in the city center. The shop has even made garments for the Emperor of Japan. This is why the Kudou family has been their loyal customer for years.
When Kiyoka brings Miyo to the shop, Keiko is delighted. Having known Kiyoka his whole life, she can tell this young woman is special to him. Keiko warmly welcomes Miyo and decides to make her a beautiful kimono covered in sakura blossoms According to her, Miyo is like a diamond in the rough. The more you polish, the more she will shine.

Sumi Usuba
Sumi Usuba is the mother of Miyo Saimori. She is from a gifted family with very rare mind manipulation abilities. These include everything from Telepathy to controlling human emotions. Knowing Miyo would inherit these powers, Sumi worried others might take advantage of the girl’s gifts.
So she made the difficult choice to seal Miyo’s abilities, to keep her safe. Though Miyo’s father shunned them, Sumi nurtured a close bond with her daughter. Unfortunately, Sumi passed on while Miyo was still young. But Sumi’s devotion and hard decisions went on shaping Miyo’s life in unseen ways.

Yoshito Gudou
Yoshito Gudou is the right-hand man of Kiyoka who’s also the head of the Anti-Grotesque Task Force. Gudou has a lighthearted personality that often clashes with Kiyoka’s serious and stoic nature. Gudou enjoys teasing him and trying to get him to loosen up, though his antics frequently annoy Kiyoka.
While easygoing on the surface, Gudou is extremely competent at his job. He is skilled at both official police work and unofficial, off-the-books tasks. He is also a very good friend of Miyo and tries to protect her newfound happiness.

Yurie
Yurie is a woman of duty. She is the only caretaker of Kiyoka Kudou before Miyo arrived. Though her body is now stooped from years of labor, Yurie’s mind remains sharp. She keeps a close watch over the household, maintaining order with an understated grace.
She also plays a key role in Kiyoka and Miyo’s relationship. After all, Yurie understands the complex social landscape the young couple must navigate and lends her support in subtle ways.

Hana
As a servant in the Saimori household, Hana took the neglected Miyo under her wing. Seeing a child in need, Hana sheltered Miyo with selfless maternal care. But Hana’s compassion proved too radical for such a household. Her simple act of humanity saw her cast out from servitude.
However, she was able to reunite with Miyo, thanks to Kiyoka for being so thoughtful. The two had a lovely chat at his household where she revealed how after getting fired she was able to move on. With Hana’s encouragement, Miyo was able to gift her handmade hair thread to Kiyoka.

Miyo Saimori
Miyo Saimori is a young woman who has endured great hardship in her life. As the eldest daughter in the Saimori household, Miyo faced constant abuse from her father Shinichi, stepmother, and step-sister. She was restricted to the house, never allowed outside, or given new clothes.
Despite the cruelty she faced, Miyo maintained a gentle spirit. She never lost her modesty or humility, always apologizing and striving to get along with her family. Miyo became a beloved character not just for her perseverance, but for her relatability. Many fans connected with her story of surviving an abusive home life.

Kiyoka Kudou
When Miyo’s father Shinichi gave her to the Kudou household, it was with cruel intentions. Shinichi viewed Kiyoka as a violent young man who he believed would mistreat Miyo. However, Kiyoka proved to have a compassionate heart under his rough exterior. Rather than abusing Miyo, he treated her with kindness and respect.
Kiyoka was patient and gentle with the shy, timid girl. He made an effort to help Miyo smile again after her traumatic childhood. Not only this but when Kiyoka learned of the abuse Miyo faced, he boldly confronted her father and demanded an apology.
