Mushoku Tensei: Who Is Eris?

With an incredibly headstrong personality and a stronger talent for sword fighting, Eris is one of the main characters driving Rudeus on his journey in the fantasy world of Mushoku Tensei. Though she is inconsequential at first, the two children quickly grow to like one another after Eris’ tenth birthday, and then later, after the Teleport incident, where they both get teleported to the demon continent.

The ending of the first season left fans with many questions about the main female lead. She left Rudeus right after the first time they properly got together, leading Rudeus traumatized. Because of this incident, he develops erectile dysfunction and starts to fear the affection of women and their judgment.

Appearance

Eris is the only member of Rudeus’ harem who has a large chest. She sports bright red hair that has the same red shade as her eyes and stands at a respectable 170 cm.

Earlier in the anime, she wears a knee-length skirt with a cute shirt to go along with it but swaps it out for more practical wear during the later parts of the show. Now she wears a pair of brown breeches and a white shirt with some black accents to give it some recognizability.

Personality

• Headstrong: Eris is an incredibly headstrong person. She grew up in a doting household, which leads her to be arrogant and unforgiving. However, she mellows out because of her interactions with Rudeus and learns to control her more violent impulses.
• Brave: Eris is an incredibly brave individual. She was able to stand up to the Dragon God, Orsted because she wanted to save Rudeus. She felt bad about herself afterward because she couldn’t do anything to help him when he needed her most.
• Inferiority Complex: Despite being considered to be the ideal woman in Rudeus’ world, Eris considers herself unworthy of him. The level of miscommunication in the show is quite infuriating, and one aspect of it relates to how both of them feel like they are insufficient for the other, which results in neither approaching the other out of misplaced reverence and inferiority.
• Excitable: Eris is an excitable person who likes to explore new things. She consistently expresses her excitement when discovering mundane things, like the turtle-roofed houses in the Demon continent. Indeed, she acts more like an isekai protagonist in this regard than Rudeus does most of the time.
• Tsundere: Eris is a textbook Tsundere. She constantly hits Rudeus and gets flustered when he so much as touches her. She displays negative emotions toward him when she actually quite likes him, leading to an incredibly infuriating level of miscommunication.

History

Eris initially encounters Rudeus, who is younger than her, when he comes from his village to teach her magic. Initially, she harbors ill intent towards the young child and refuses to learn from him, but after he saves her from a band of criminals that try to kidnap the two (part of the kidnapping was orchestrated, but it ended up becoming a real kidnapping by the end of it), she accepts the need to learn from him. Though she never got better than Rudeus in magic, she is much better than him at sword fighting.

After the Teleport Incident, Eris and Rudeus get transported to the same location in the Demon Continent and team up with Ruijard to form an adventuring team. The three adventurers go on many adventures together, even going up against the Dragon God Orsted, though they lose badly. During this time period, Eris learns to sense mana and trains with Ruijard to become stronger.

Why Did Eris Leave?

When the two reach their hometown, Eris finds out that her family was killed, leaving her in a depressed state. She confesses to Rudeus, consummates her love for him, and then decides that the best course of action would be to leave without saying anything to the man she had her first time with.

Her justification is that she needs to get stronger in order to protect Rudeus and become her own person, which is admirable. However, not telling him about it at all and leaving without a word isn’t quite as admirable. This directly results in Rudeus developing a fear of women and getting erectile dysfunction.

Powers

• Physical Prowess: Eris has a very athletic body considering she’s been training since she was a child. Because of this, she is able to make unpredictable moves and attack from uncommon angles, giving her an advantage in normal sword fights.
• Sword God Style: Eris is mainly a sword fighter. She developed her skill with the sword under the tutelage of Ghyslaine, later going on to become the disciple of the Sword God directly. She wants to cut down the Dragon God, Orsted, something that the Sword God wants to do as well.
• Presence Search: She learned how to detect people around her, sensing their mana and using other sensory inputs to pin down their location under the tutelage of Ruijard.
• Magical Ability: Eris doesn’t have any special magic powers to speak of. Though Rudeus taught her the basics, she never utilized magic all that much in her adventuring, choosing to focus on the physicality of sword fighting instead. However, she can conjure fire.
