WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from the Mushoku Tensei Light NovelsThe Mana Calamity teleportation incident turned Rudy’s world upside down, scattering his family members across distant continents. Though he was fortunate enough to eventually reunite with most of them (Paul, Norn, Aisha, and Lilia), the whereabouts of his mother, Zenith Greyrat, remained a mystery.
Now, with Mushoku Tensei Season 2 airing, fans eagerly anticipate the unfolding story, hopeful that it will shed light on Zenith’s fate and bring the family back together once more. However, the most pressing question is whether she’s even alive. Rudy certainly hopes so, though as time passes, even his optimism wanes.
Is Rudeus’ Mom Alive?
There is no need for concern regarding Zenith Greyrat’s wellbeing, as the Demon Empress Kishirika has confirmed to Roxy Migurdia that she’s still alive, back in Season 1. Kishirika lent her assistance with her all-seeing demon eye that can locate anyone. This powerful entity was the one who gifted another eye to Rudues, which has the ability to see the near future. And she has stepped up once again to help him.
Kishirika revealed that Zenith currently resides on the Begaritt Continent, within Rapan City. This revelation came as a relief to Roxy, who immediately informed her rescue party. Even though season 1 didn’t reveal much about Zenith, this news confirms Zenith is alive. Her journey is far from over, and the future holds many exciting possibilities for her character and her involvement in the larger narrative.
Where Is Zenith?
Roxy eventually finds out that Zenith is in the Teleportation Labyrinth. It’s known for its many teleportation traps that confuse adventurers. After reuniting with her party, she decided to split up to deliver the news. Roxy hurried off to inform Paul about her wife’s whereabouts, while Elinalise went to tell Rudeus that his mother had finally been found. She assured Rudeus not to worry – Paul would handle the rescue mission. It’s important to note that this news reached Rudeus when he was already enrolled at the Ranoa Magic Academy to continue his magical studies.
However, as Paul and Lilia embark on their expedition to find Zenith, Rudeus receives an urgent letter back home requesting his help, as their search has stalled out. Meanwhile, he finds himself torn between responsibilities to his family and his new marriage. Hitogami also pushes Rudeus to refuse their plea, but Norn and Elinalise insist he goes. Rudeus hopes this detour in his young marriage will be brief, but he realizes that when it comes to family, some duties cannot be refused.
Additionally, for the first time, he defies Hitogami’s advice. Little does Rudeus know that this small act of rebellion is about to majorly mess up Hitogami’s objectives, whatever it may be. Before departing, his friend from Magic Academy provides a teleportation circle location that enables him to reach the distant Begaritto Continent in just a few weeks rather than two years. Therefore, the shortcut allows Rudeus to respond to his family’s needs swiftly. The search for Zenith was arduous, but they finally located the room where she was being held captive.
Trapped inside an enormous mana crystal, she was guarded by a vicious hydra determined to prevent her rescue. An invisible barrier that concealed her presence made it impossible for people outside to locate her, even with powerful magic. After an intense battle, the party managed to slay the hydra, but at great cost – Rudeus lost his arm, and Paul was ripped in two as he selflessly shielded his son. With relief in his eyes, Paul proudly gazed up at Rudeus one last time before succumbing to his wounds. Rudeus then built a funeral pyre and cremated his father’s remains as per the customs. However, Zenith was now but a hollow semblance of her former self – mute, unresponsive, yet with memories and awareness intact.
Will She Ever Recover?
After everything, he brought Zenith home to Sharia, where Lilia could care for her as a maid. Norn and Aisha also came to live permanently under his guardianship. After the Teleport Incident, Zenith could suddenly read minds even though she was stuck in a strange dream-like state. She couldn’t move or talk out loud, so everyone thought she had lost her memories.
Trapped in this silent reverie, Zenith conversed with her loved ones through her telepathic gift. However, she never recovered from her dream state. Even when not actively conversing with others, Zenith did not feel alone as her loved ones were always around her, and this was what gave her the will to live after Paul’s death. Yet, her life remained tragic at its core.
