Some speculate that Hitogami has a hidden agenda and may be working towards a more sinister goal. So, what does Hitogami really want? Is he the one plotting the narrative of Mushoku Tensei since the beginning? This article has all you need and more!

Is Hitogami An Imposter?

Eons ago, Creator God grew weary of constructing countless planets and domains. For his final works, he fashioned six pristine yet imperfect flat worlds and fused them into a cube, stabilizing their delicate balances. The Mushoku Tensei world, for this reason, is known as Six-Faced-Universe. God then made six lesser gods to watch over these creations, giving each of them power over one world: Sea God, Dragon God, Beast God, Human God, Heaven God, and the Demon God.

They were forbidden to interfere with each other. But they worked together to protect the structure of the cube. The Creator tied each God’s life to their world so that if a God died, the world would be destroyed. Though powerful people and demigods would emerge in each realm, none could surpass the might of these six faces of creation. With his magnum opus complete, The Creator gave up his form and perished, leaving his body in the empty space at the cube’s center, also known as the Void World.

But little pieces of it were left, floating in the darkness. Those little pieces came back together over a really, really long time. The god reformed, but it wasn’t the same. Something else woke up in the darkness. It called itself Hitogami and pretended to be the Human God. The first Dragon God sensed something off. But he couldn’t figure out exactly what Hitogami was up to.

Within the Japanese language, the word ‘Human God’ is expressed using two unique forms: ヒトガミ and 人神. The first one (written using katakana) is read as Hitogami, which exclusively translates to ‘Man-God,’ whereas the second one (written in Kanji characters) has an alternative reading as ‘Hito-shin.’ 人神 combines two kanji characters, where ‘人’ means ‘human,’ and ‘神’ means ‘Shin’ or ‘deity.’ Interestingly, in the Japanese raw translations, other true divine beings are identified by the common ending or suffix ‘-shin.’ So, the author Rifujin na Magonote is strongly implying that Hitogami is not the real Human God.

How Hitogami Manipulated The Events So Far

Mushoku Tensei Orsted, Dragon God from Old Dragon's Tale

It is unknown what happened to the Human God, but we can assume he was killed like other True Gods as part of Hitogami’s broader plans. Throughout the story, Hitogami creates conflicts between different factions, leading to widespread destruction and chaos. He whispered poisonous lies into the ears of the Dragon God and his five most powerful generals until their distrust and paranoia of the other realms festered into open hostility. Hitogami tricked Dragon God into launching a devastating attack on the neighboring realms. The refugees fled into the human world, making it the main world.

With the other realms in ruins, the Dragon Generals turned against their ruler. With his dying breath, the Dragon God used his magic to create an inescapable prison within the Void (at the cube’s center). Since then, Hitogami has been unable to escape this place and instead uses his pawns, which Orsted also refers to as his ‘Apostles.’ He can appear in their dreams and tell them what to do next. It’s also interesting to note that with his pawns, he caused the split of Laplace into Technique God and Demon Dragon God Laplace.

Attempts To Control The Future

From killing fellow gods to influencing the actions of key characters, Hitogami’s sinister machinations have a significant impact on the narrative of Mushoku Tensei. It is said that Rudy’s descendants will be the ones bringing his doom. This prophecy has driven Hitogami to desperate measures to avoid his predestined fate. He has gone as far as trying to eliminate Rudy’s lovers and unborn children in a last-ditch effort to erase the possibility.

Despite his extraordinary abilities, it seems, Hitogami is still a slave to the same fundamental will to survive that governs all living creatures with a sense of self. He uses his powers to alter the flow of time and influence events. In doing so, he creates alternate timelines where he reigns supreme, furthering his control over the lives of the people in Mushoku Tensei. However, his powers of foresight are limited. He may see fragments of what is to come, but the future remains unwritten.
