MultiVersus only went into open beta on July 26 but Player First Games has already dropped the nerf hammer on one of the game’s most frustrating characters, Taz the Tasmanian Devil. You can find the full patch notes here.
If you had been following the week-long closed beta of MultiVersus you’ll know the demon that is Taz. One of Taz’s abilities, his side-special specifically, turns him into a rampaging tornado. The tornado hits hard and knocks opponents back quite a distance. What makes it even more frustrating is that the ability takes priority over a significant number of other abilities, meaning it was very difficult to counter or avoid.
Well, Player First Games have heard the community’s complaints and brought in some changes to make Taz less of a hair-pulling prospect to tackle for opponents. The nerfs to Taz are as follows:
- A decrease to the tornado’s duration and the additional duration gained by passing an ally.
- Removing one of the multi-hits of the tornado.
- Decreasing the hit pause of all the hits in the tornado.
- Reduced knockback from the final hit in the tornado from 1375 to 1275.
Additionally, Player First revealed they will be looking to gate the tornado behind a cooldown in the future, “Right now, our plan is to transition the Tornado to a cooldown move in an upcoming patch. The tornado is Taz’s signature move so we want to keep it as one of his most powerful attacks, with the cooldown forcing more intentional use of it. These nerfs will reduce Taz’s strength, especially at higher levels of play, so expect some buffs to the other moves in his kit in the near future.”
Taz’s reign of terror could be over with these nerfs, and with additional balancing coming his way in the near future, we could start to see the Tasmanian Devil tumbling down the tier lists.
Speaking of tier lists, it seems MultiVersus is certainly being treated like a competitive experience, much like its inspiration Super Smash Bros. Several sites have been posting tier lists for the crossover fighting game. While the game hasn’t been out long enough for a proper consensus to be reached, multiple sources appear to be rating Shaggy and Jake the Dog as top-tier picks.
