Minecraft: How To Use Smithing Templates

The Trails and Tails update in Minecraft introduced several new mechanics, and perhaps the most extensive customization since changing your username in the form of Armor Trims. Connected to Armor Trims are Smithing Templates, which you’ll need to obtain in order to trick out your look. Smithing Templates are now also required to upgrade your gear to Netherite.

However, as with so many things in Minecraft, the in-game instructions on using these new Smithing Templates are sparse. Keep reading for everything you need to know about getting every Smithing Template, how to use them, and which resources can be used for those all-important, stylish new Armor Trims.

Smithing Templates can be found in a variety of ways. However, most will be obtained from chests in key locations or the new Archaeology System. There are currently 17 Smithing Templates in the game. Here’s how and where to obtain each one:

How To Duplicate Smithing TemplatesMinecraft Steve with the Diamond Sword in Diamond Armor

Once you’ve found a Template, you’ll want to duplicate it. This is because templates are consumed when used – potentially leaving you without a way to easily find them again. To duplicate a Template you will need:

  • Seven Diamonds
  • One Template
  • One block matching the Template (the Dune Template requires sand, for instance)

Arrange these resources on a crafting table with the template in the top, the block in the center, and the Diamonds filling the remaining spaces.

Templates can be duplicated infinitely, assuming you have the required resources. Lots of Diamonds are called for, then.

How To Use A Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template

The most important reason to use Smithing Templates, from a gameplay perspective, is to upgrade gear to Netherite. In order to do this, you will need:

  • A piece of Diamond gear or a Diamond tool
  • A Netherite ingot
  • A Netherite Smithing Template
  • A Smithing Table

Once you have all these items, place the gear, ingot, and Smithing Template into the Smithing Table. It should then create a Netherite-reinforced copy of the gear for you to use.

How To Use An Armor Trim Smithing Template

Minecraft Alex and Zuri wearing armor trims on iron and diamond armor

To apply an armor trim to any piece of gear, you’ll need a few resources and a Smithing Table.

  • One ingot or crystal of any type
  • One piece of armor
  • One Smithing Template

The resulting armor piece will have your fancy new trim on it, and you can customize just about any wearable item from leather to Netherite armor. The exception is your hard-earned Elytra, which sadly is not eligible for customization.

All Materials For Armor Trims

Currently, there are ten different materials that can be used to apply an armor trim. Each results in a different color.

  • Copper
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Netherite
  • Redstone Dust
  • Lapis Lazuli
  • Quartz
  • Amethyst
  • Emerald
  • Diamond

Some of these resources are common, but others are rare, and additional uses are very welcome. After all, there are only so many machines and Redstone Logic Gates you can make.
