Minecraft: Confidential US Military Documents Leaked on Official Discord Server

While gaming news typically concerns its respective community, the latest revelation has the potential to extend its impact beyond that boundary and affect the wider world. Apparently, confidential documents belonging to the US military have surfaced online, related to the ongoing Ukraine invasion. The method that has been used to leak these documents has caught people’s attention, too, as they first surfaced on a game’s Discord server.

According to a report by WSJ (via Kotaku), these documents are being regarded as one of the “most damaging” leaks in decades. The leak’s inception comes from a rather small Discord server, whose members were majorly American citizens. Once these documents caught fire in this community, they were shared further to larger communities until it reached the Minecraft Discord server.

It was just a matter of time then for these documents to be shared on other popular social media sites and discussion boards such as Twitter, 4chan, and Telegram. It was then that the leak caught the Department of Defense’s attention, and it kickstarted an investigation over the leak. It was later revealed that these were highly classified documents, as a total of 50 of them were labelled either “Secret” or “Top Secret.”

The report also reveals the content of the classified documents, and many will be surprised to learn about these details. Firstly, it talks about the combat situation in Ukraine, the weapons that are being used by the country’s and United States Forces, offensive strategies, information about the countries aerial defence, important statistics related to the war at hand and other communications.

Moreover, the way these documents were leaked has also been revealed. The conversation on the server itself is deleted, so some parts of the story may be missing. Regardless, the report states that the documents were shared on the server due to an argument over the Ukraine and Russia war being real or not. These documents were used as evidence to make the non-believer understand that the war is, in fact, real.

Once these were shared, a few of the server participants had replies related to them, but then they moved on to other regular topics related to Minecraft. The shocking thing is, officials were not aware about this information till more than a month after the leak. At the moment, officials are investigating to find the source of this leak and Discord is also cooperating with the government. It has also been announced that this leak is now being termed as a “treasonous act” so consequences are going to be dire for the perpetrator.
