In Minecraft’s Trails and Tales update, there are new blocks, biomes, and mobs to experiment with. Among new additions to the game is the long-awaited winner of the 2022 mob vote, the Sniffer. These inquisitive creatures delight in digging, and can find valuable underground items for those who know how to manage and take care of them. Minecraft is full of unusual animals, but the Sniffer is rather unlike any other that has been introduced so far.
Sniffers are tied to the new Archeology mechanic in the game, and cannot be found in the wild. The process of acquiring them, then, is rather different, and ties into their nature as subterranean dwellers. Here’s a closer look at these fascinating new creatures.
Where To Find Sniffers
Sniffers only spawn from a Sniffer Egg. This egg can be obtained by Brushing Suspicious Sand in Warm Ocean Ruins. To do so, an Archeology Brush must be used. Once an egg has been obtained, the player will receive the hidden advancement Smells Interesting. This advancement leads, in turn, to several other hidden advancements about Sniffers.
The recipe for a Brush is a Stick, a Copper Ingot, and a Feather. These being readily available ingredients, players shouldn’t have any issues creating Brushes as needed.
How To Use Sniffers
Sniffers can be used to farm Torchflower seeds and Pitcher Flower seeds, which makes them quite useful in this cozy title. When provided with at least a 6×6 space of blocks that can be dug through, Sniffers will occasionally track down a seed, then proceed to dive and dig it up. After digging up a seed, there is an eight-minute cooldown before the Sniffer can dig again.
Blocks that the Sniffer can dig through are:
- Dirt
- Grass
- Podzol
- Coarse Dirt
- Rooted Dirt
- Moss
- Mud
- Muddy Mangrove Roots
To prevent Sniffers from digging, you can corral them in an area with ground made of blocks they can’t dig through.
Making the accessible area less than 6×6 will also stop any unwarranted digging.
Keeping Sniffers
Once you’ve obtained a Sniffer Egg, it can be hatched by placing it in block form. Over time, the egg will mature and eventually spawn a Snifflet, or baby Sniffer. Snifflets take two in-game days to become adult Sniffers, such haste being the norm in the inviting world of Minecraft.
Breeding Sniffers
Sniffers can be fed Torchflower seeds (although they can’t be tempted by them). Feeding a Sniffer Torchflower Seeds will result in the mob healing and attempting to breed with any other nearby Sniffers. Breeding two adult sniffers will spawn a new Sniffer Egg. Once a breeding pair has produced an egg, there is a five-minute cooldown until they can breed again.
Sniffer Enclosures
Sniffers cannot climb like spiders, however, they are very prone to walking away from where the player wants them to be. It is advised, then, to use a fence or two-block high wall to contain them. To promote digging, a minimum enclosure size of 6×6 is required.
Multiple Sniffers can share an enclosure without disturbing their digging behavior.
