BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Former Georgetown (Ky.) football coach and NAIA Hall of Fame member Bill Cronin will have his name added to the Mid-South Conference Football Regular Season Trophy, Mid-South Conference Commissioner Eric Ward announced today.

The Tom Dowling-Bill Cronin trophy will be presented to the Mid-South Conference Football regular season champion at the conclusion of each season. The trophy bears the names of two of the more influential and successful football coaches in the Mid-South Conference.

“I had the opportunity to work with Coach Cronin as an athletic director and commissioner over the past 20-plus years,” Ward said. “He is a tremendous football coach and an even better human being. Cronin served and brought the highest recognition to Georgetown College and the Mid-South Conference, and he did it with honor, integrity, respect and humility.

“We very rarely get the opportunity to experience true greatness in our lives but Bill Cronin has been that opportunity for me,” Ward added. “I am proud that the Mid-South Conference has chosen to place his name on our Conference Championship Football Trophy alongside Coach Dowling.”

Cronin announced his retirement after 25 years at the helm of the Tigers following the 2021 season. He finished his career with a record of 218-65 winning two NAIA National Championships and 14 MSC Championships. Cronin earned NAIA Coach of the Year honors twice and was named the MSC Coach of the Year eight times.

“I am truly flattered!” Cronin said. “This is an honor that not many can size up to. Tom Dowling was a mentor of mine, one of the original founders of the Mid-South Conference, and just a great football mind.

“To have my name etched on a trophy that I competed for on more than 30 seasons is surreal, Cronin added. “I would like to thank all who have made this a reality and know that I will always be the MSC’s number one fan.”

Dowling’s name was previously added to the trophy by a unanimous vote of the MSC Administrative Council. He became the MSC’s first commissioner in 1995 after serving as head football coach at three institutions, including a pair of Mid-South schools — Georgetown and Cumberlands.

Ward is scheduled to present Cronin with a replica of the championship trophy on Saturday when Georgetown hosts Cumberlands.
