As 2023 comes to a close, it will mark three years since the launch of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, the latest offerings from the major players in the gaming industry. Neither of these flagship consoles have seen any official announcements regarding new iterations from their respective manufacturers. Nevertheless, there have been rumours circulating about potential successors being developed for both platforms.
The most recent rumour on this topic has been discussed by Shpeshal Nick from Xbox Era in their recent podcast’s Rumor Mill segment. Nick disclosed that he had received direct messages from two separate sources regarding a “Digital Only” edition of the Xbox Series X, with both sources sharing similar information. This was the initial part of the rumour. As for the second part, which he couldn’t provide further details about, it suggests that Microsoft might be working on “other hardware” set for release in 2025.
This is certainly exciting news for fans, as many have been anticipating a console with the powerful features of the Xbox Series X, but in a smaller size. The removal of the disc drive is expected to lead to a noticeable reduction in the console’s dimensions, resulting in a more streamlined Xbox Series X. However, this information is based on a rumour and not an official source, so take it with a grain of salt.
Additionally, Nick discussed something he’s learned about the Nintendo Switch 2. While he couldn’t provide details, he did suggest that the upcoming successor to the Switch might have qualities similar to those found in PlayStation consoles. However, the exact implications of this statement remain unclear.
