microsoft: Microsoft solves the big complaint Google had with Windows 11 – Times of India

Microsoft is finally making it easier to switch default browsers in Windows 11. With this, the company is fixing the issue that not just some users but the search giant Google too had with the company’s latest-generation operating system. Google’s senior vice president (Android, Chrome, Chrome OS, Play, Photos) Hiroshi Lockheimer had criticised Microsoft for giving users a complex method to change their default browser (Edge) to Google Chrome or any other browser. “Windows gives you the most choice.” — someone at Microsoft,” Lockheimer had tweeted, taking a dig at the company.

The Windows 11 build 22000.593 makes it easier for users to change their default browser. The operating system now gets a dedicated button in the control panel that allows users to pick the default browser of their choice. The change was first spotted by reverse engineer Rafael Rivera in Windows 11 build 22509 in the dev channel. It is an optional update.
With the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft changed the way users assign default apps. On the new operating system, users have to set default apps as per the file type or link type instead of a single switch. This means that for changing the default browser, users have to change the default file type for FTP, HTTPS, HTTP, HTML, HTM, PDF, SHTML, SVG, WEBP, XHT and XHTML.
After installing the optional update, users can use the new ‘Set Default Browser’ button to change all the web browsing-related associations with a single click. It is worth noting that the change is part of an optional update and will be available to all eligible users soon. To check if you have received the update, you can go to Settings > Windows Update.
If you want to change the default browser on Windows 11, you can follow these steps.

  1. Go to Settings on your PC.
  2. Find the App section and click on it.
  3. From the panel at the left side of the screen, tap on Default apps.
  4. At the top of the page, you can find the option to select your default browser.

Since the launch of Windows 11, the tech giant has made several moves to make users stick to its own Edge browser. The company even started a campaign where users were shown new prompts whenever a user visited the Chrome browser download page.
