Shonen Jump+, the popular manga app by the Japanese publishing company Shueisha, experienced a data breach in its iOS version.
Shueisha issued an apology (thanks, Animehunch) for unintentionally leaking the email addresses of 42 users. The incident took place on July 7, 2023, due to a human error in the app’s operation, which allowed unintended access to affected accounts.
In addition to email addresses, the leak may have also exposed other information, such as profile information, coin balance, and purchase history. However, there is no evidence that any unauthorised billing or use of paid coins occurred.
The company has said that it is taking steps to prevent a recurrence of the leak, including raising awareness of information security among staff members and ensuring that appropriate operations are carried out.
Shonen Jump+ has also contacted the affected users and offered them a free one-year subscription to the app. The service is available exclusively in Japan, while Manga Plus is the platform where manga from Shonen Jump+ are released in English.
