Buch will not just be the first woman chairperson of Sebi but also the first non-IAS person to be at the helm. Current chairman Ajay Tyagi’s five-year tenure ends on February 28. Buch will take charge from March 1.
On October 4 last year, she finished her five-year term at Sebi as a whole-time member. She was the former whole-time member of Sebi from April 05, 2017, to October 4, 2021.
Also, the first person to be appointed as a whole-time member of Sebi from the private sector. Her portfolio at Sebi included mutual funds, portfolio management schemes, market surveillance and collective investment schemes.
Before joining Sebi, Buch served as a consultant to the New Development Bank in Shanghai and also headed the Singapore office of Greater Pacific Capital, a private equity firm.
Buch, a management graduate from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in a career spanning over 20 years has served in various roles in a private bank. She started her career with ICICI Bank and later went on to become the chief executive officer at ICICI Securities.
