The Outlast Trials is a bit of a sleeper hit of 2023. With over one million units sold and a ridiculous amount of polish for an Early Access game, it looks like it’s got a good long life ahead of it. Within this unexpected hit, however, has been a mini hit into itself in the form of an armwrestling mini-game, which lets you pit your reflexes and timing against other players.
Now, in an interview here at DualShockers, developer Red Barrel Studios revealed that they’re going to keep expanding the game’s excellent lobby area to include more fun mini-games for players to enjoy in between the deadly trials. Head of Red Barrel Studios Philippe Morin told us: “We are working on an additional game at the moment. We have one that’s almost done and I think people will like it.”
Talking about the kinds of mini-games they’re looking to add, Morin continued: “There are ideas on the table that are aligned with psychological tests, or ways to test the players with a fun mechanic while at the same time fitting inside the idea of we’re brainwashing you,” he told us. “So we want to know where you’re at psychologically.”
It sounds intriguing. Could we be looking at Rorschach Tests that end up affecting the hallucinations you get during the trials? Five-finger skillet where your avatar could end up actually losing their fingers?
Morin admitted that the studio was surprised at the popularity of the armwrestling mini-game, but it was always their intention to make an engaging lobby experience. In another tantalising tidbit, he revealed that the Murkhoff facility where the game takes place is located near the Havasupai reservation where Outlast 2 took place, and you can actually see the facility in that game. “I don’t know if you spotted it, but when you were on the other side of the lake [in Outlast 2] you could see an antenna and the facility in the background,” he told us. “All this is pretty close to Temple Gate. I’ll leave it at that for now.”
So with new mini-games, potential Outlast 2 crossover, and a whole lot more content to come, there’s plenty to look forward to in the promising co-op horror game.
