Long jumper Jeswin Aldrin finally included in Worlds squad | More sports News – Times of India

CHANDIGARH: Battling dwindling form, long jumper Jeswin Aldrin was on Sunday included in the Indian squad for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Oregon, starting July 15.
The 20-year-old Aldrin was kept out of the original 22-member squad after he failed to live up to the expectations of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) selectors in the events that followed his magical leap of 8.26m, achieved at the Federation Cup in April. He had already breached the World Championships qualification mark of 8.22m.
However, a dip in performance in the next three events, where he failed to even touch the 8m mark, put him under the scanner. In May, the Tamil Nadu athlete competed in Spain and Italy but could only come up with 7.82m and 7.69m in the two events.
Last month, Aldrin came up with yet another disappointing 7.71m in the qualifying round and 7.51m in the final of the National Inter-State Championships, which was considered as the final selection trial for the world championships.
While naming the squad for the World Championships last week, AFI president Adille Sumariwalla had said that the national governing body will hold a set of trials to gauge his performance before including him in the team.
Aldrin came up with a best effort of 7.99m during the first trial held at the NIS Patiala on July 4. Yet to be convinced by his effort, the AFI called him for a final round of trial on Friday, where he could only manage 7.93m. While his efforts were nowhere near the target of 8.10m set by chief national coach Radhakrishnan Nair, the AFI selection committee considered his ‘close to 8.00m’ effort for a place in the side.
“We have decided to give him the chance to compete in the World Championships after he jumped 7.99m in the first trial and 7.93m in Patiala,” Sumariwalla said.
