Logan Director James Mangold in Talks to Take on DC’s Swamp Thing Movie

Just a day after DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran announced their initial plan for their DCU, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, a potential director is reportedly already being floated.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that James Mangold, who directed Logan and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, is apparently in talks to write and direct Swamp Thing. Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to IGN’s request for comment.

But, even before that report came out, Mangold and Gunn had done a bit of social media teasing of their own, stoking speculation. Last night, Mangold tweeted a comics panel of Swamp Thing, which Gunn then retweeted.

Swamp Thing was one of five movies and ten overall projects revealed as part of Gunn and Safran’s big announcement. They didn’t reveal too much about the Swamp Thing movie, other than that it would explore the creature’s “dark origins.” Gunn also mentioned at yesterday’s big event that they were already in talks with three directors out of the five movies announced.

In addition to his critically beloved Logan, which earned him a screenplay Oscar nomination, Mangold’s also known for films like Girl, Interrupted, Walk the Line, and 3:10 to Yuma. His Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to be released on June 30.

Swamp Thing last got the big-screen treatment in 1982, with a movie directed by Wes Craven. There was also a TV series that ran three seasons in the early ’90s, as well as a short-lived show in 2019 on the since-shuttered streaming platform DC Universe.
