Linda Yaccarino to quit? X CEO faces call to resign amid advertiser backlash over Elon Musk

X CEO Linda Yaccarino is under a lot of pressure to quit the Elon Musk-owned social media platform, after advertisers have started pulling out again, over his alleged support for an anti-Semitic post

In the midst of mounting pressure from advertisers, speculation arises over the possibility of Linda Yaccarino stepping down as the CEO of X, also known as Twitter. The heat intensifies as major brands, including Disney, Apple, and IBM, pull their advertising from the platform following Elon Musk’s controversial anti-Semitic remarks.

According to reports by the Financial Times, Yaccarino, the head of X, is grappling with demands from advertisers urging her resignation due to concerns surrounding Musk’s ownership of the platform and the prevalence of anti-Semitic content.

Close associates and industry executives advise Yaccarino to step down to salvage her reputation, but she remains steadfast in her commitment to X’s objectives and its workforce, refraining from any official statement on the matter.

Musk’s recent endorsement of an anti-Semitic idea on X triggered a wave of criticism, with a group named Media Matters revealing advertisements for prominent brands adjacent to posts promoting “pro-Nazi” and white nationalist content. In response, brands such as IBM, Apple, Disney, Comcast, and Warner Bros ceased advertising on the platform, fearing association with controversial content and distancing themselves from Musk.

Marketing company executive Lou Paskalis has cautioned Yaccarino about potential repercussions for brands continuing to advertise on X, predicting shareholder and customer discontent. He argues that any brand aligning with X amid Musk’s actions is making an ill-advised decision, asserting that Musk’s conduct has irreversibly tarnished the platform’s advertising landscape.

Yaccarino was enlisted by X to regain advertisers who had withdrawn due to Musk’s policy changes, which relaxed rules and reduced resources for safety and staff. Despite her respected background in advertising at NBCUniversal, Yaccarino faces user and advertiser discontent stemming from Musk’s controversial alterations and posts.

Amid these challenges, calls for Yaccarino’s resignation surfaced, even during her daughter’s wedding. While some claim these calls are made in her best interest, the situation remains complex and challenging.

Yaccarino contends that X has made strides in enhancing safety measures, asserting a commitment to combatting anti-Semitism and discrimination. Musk denies allegations of anti-Semitism, expressing a desire for a positive future, and has threatened legal action against Media Matters, a challenge they assert they would prevail in. X, however, remains silent on these developments.
