Qui-Gon Jinn actor Liam Neeson has criticised Disney and Lucasfilm for making too many Star Wars spin-offs, saying they take away some of the series’ magic.
As reported by GameSpot, Neeson was asked on What Happens Live if he was interested in starring in a Qui-Gon Jinn spin-off akin to Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi show that premiered last year. “No, I’m not,” he replied plainly.
“There’s so many spin-offs of Star Wars,” Neeson added. “It’s diluting it to me, and it’s taken away some of the mystery and magic in a weird way.”
Star Wars has gone down a Marvel Cinematic Universe-esque approach since being acquired by Disney in 2012, as the sequel trilogy was joined by spin-off films and several TV shows including The Mandalorian and Andor.
Neeson was arguably part of a Star Wars spin-off himself, of course, thanks to his starring in Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. He also made a brief cameo in the aforementioned Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+, though the actor seemingly wouldn’t be interested in reprising the role over a longer period.
He would have plenty of opportunities to reprise his role for another cameo, however, as several Star Wars films and TV shows are still to come. The Mandalorian Season 3 is right around the corner with a premiere on March 1, while an Ahsoka TV series is also expected this year alongside the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew show starring Jude Law.
