One Circular Quay project will include Sydney’s first Waldorf Astoria hotel.

One Circular Quay project will include Sydney’s first Waldorf Astoria hotel.

The array of new towers at the “gateway” to Sydney include the $2 billion revamped Quay Quarter at 50 Bridge Street, which extends outwards to Loftus Street. There is also the mixed-use, residential-led precinct at 505 George Street by Mirvac and Coombes Property Group, which is under construction and valued at about $1 billion.

Nearby will be Lendlease and Mitsubishi Estate Asia’s $3 billion One Circular Quay project on the former Gold Fields site, which will include Sydney’s first Waldorf Astoria hotel and luxury apartments.

The City of Sydney has also made it clear that in all the new major projects, developers must include a high degree of public space and facilities.

City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the complex serves both private and public interests, “with an impressive office tower as well as public space with a beautifully designed community building, a major public artwork and by March next year, connected retail laneways, and public bicycle facilities”.

Under the plan, close to half of the Sydney Place precinct is dedicated to the public, including the first plaza on George Street in decades. There is a community building, designed by British architect Sir David Adjaye in partnership with Indigenous Australian artist Daniel Boyd, and transferred to the City of Sydney’s ownership on completion this year.

Installation of the Plaza Community Building’s distinct rooftop canopy art, also designed by Daniel Boyd, is complete, and a second major public artwork, designed by Louise Zhang in partnership with Dennis Golding, will be open in March next year.
