Kurukshetra’s Shri Krishna AYUSH University apply for two coronavirus medicines, made from two Ayurvedic herbs – Times of India

KURUKSHETRA: The scientists of Shri Krishna AYUSH University, Kurukshetra have discovered two medicinal plants Sugandhabala and Khus, traditionally using in the treatment of other disease, which showed antiviral activity against SARS-Cov-2 (coronavirus) strain, said university officials on Friday.

The Ayurvedic herbs have been identified by Dr Rajni Kant and his team of research and innovation department of Shri Krishna AYUSH University.

The university said both plants can be helpful in the treatment and prevention of corona disease in the future.

Dr. Rajni Kant said that during the time of corona epidemic, Shadangpaniya Kwath and Ahasudarshan Ghan Vati were given to corona patients as add on medicine by the university which gave very favorable results. Therefore, it was decided by the scientists of the university’s research and innovation department to evaluate the efficacy of medicinal plants used in Shadangpaniya Kwath against coronavirus.

A team of Dr Rajni kant and Dr Naveen Kumar, principal research scientist of National Institute of Equine Virology Lab was constituted by Shri Krishna AYUSH University vice-chancellor Dr Baldev Kumar. The pre-clinical investigation of 12 medicinal plants was done by the team on SARS-Cov-2 strain.

The research revealed, “Ethanolic extract of Sugandhbala herbs exhibited almost 10 times antiviral activity at 10 µg/ml concentration and the ethanolic extract of Khus herb exhibited almost 40 times antiviral activity at 1.5 µg/ml concentration which is quite impressive result. Moreover, toxicological study of ethanolic extract of both the plants has also been done and found safe.”

Professor Anil Sharma, director, research department, congratulated the team on this important achievement and this research work was supported by Dr Manish Kumar, Dr Preeti, Aditi Sharma and Rahul Gupta.

Dr Baldev Kumar said that Ayurveda has made a huge contribution in the prevention of a dreadful corona pandemic. Shadangpaniya Kwath and Mahasudarshan Ghan Vati herbs have proved potency and be helpful in fighting against coronavirus in the future.

“University authority has also applied for patent of tablet and syrup formulations of both Sugandhabala and Khus medicinal plants in Indian Patent office. The liquid and tablet formulation samples of both plants were also given to Bandaru Dattatreya Chancellor and Governor Haryana during his visit to the university on Thursday. Governor appreciated the work done by the research and innovation department”, said Dr Baldev Kumar.

Haryana Governor and chancellor of Shri Krishna AYUSH University, Kurukshetra, Bandaru Dattatreya on Thursday said that the new campus for this varsity would be built on 103 acres of land at Fatupur village in Kurukshetra. He said an amount of Rs 500 crore will be spent by the government for the construction of the new building of this university and the construction work will be carried out in the next 36 months.
