KU announces Goyal Award to four eminent scientists – Times of India

KURUKSHETRA: The Kurukshetra University (KU) selected four eminent scientists of the country, Prof NK Mehra, AIIMS, New Delhi, Prof A Ajaya Ghosh, CSIR-NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram, Prof Shyam Sundar, BHU, Varanasi and Prof Rohini Godbole, IISc, Banglore for the coveted Goyal Prizes.

Each prize consists of a medal, a citation, and Rs 2 lakh in cash.

This was announced by KU vice-chancellor Prof Som Nath Sachdeva and Chairman of the organizing committee for Goyal Prizes. These scientists have made a great contribution in the areas of applied, chemical, life, and physical sciences respectively, Prof Som Nath said.

“Kurukshetra University is the only University in India to honour outstanding scientists of the country at such a scale,” added Prof Som Nath.

Prof SP Singh, nominee of the donor, late Ram S Goyal and the co-chairman of the organizing committee said that while Prof NK Mehra has done outstanding work in the field of Transplant Immunology and Immunogenetics, Prof Ajaya Ghosh has made an enormous contribution to our knowledge of Material Chemistry and its applications in Biology. He said Prof Shyam Sundar is a pioneer in the therapy of Visceral Leishmaniasis (Kala-Azar) and drug development by him, Miltefostin, is currently being used for the treatment of Kala-Azar in many countries. Prof Rohini Godbole, Padam Shri Awardee has made a significant contribution in Theoretical High Energy Physics and she also edited the book “Lilavati’s Daughters” highlighting the contribution of great Indian women scientists, said Prof SP Singh.

Goyal Prizes were established by the late Ram S Goyal, an NRI settled in USA in 1992. More than 100 eminent Indian scientists including CNR Rao, RA Mashelkar and K Kasturirangan have been already honoured with Goyal Prizes in the early years, said Prof Sanjiv Arora, convener of the organizing committee.

Prof Sanjiv further said that besides these prizes, the selection process for the four young scientists for Rajib Goyal prizes, below the age of 45 years, will be completed soon. The award ceremony for these prizes will be held later this year, he said.
