Eoin Morgan’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lost their fourth consecutive match of IPL 2021 on Saturday and the captain has blatantly said that his team was behind the winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) from ball one.

England’s World Cup-winning captain Morgan added that Kolkata lost a wicket every time they thought of taking the attacking route. The 34-year-old, who himself got run-out for zero, also put blame on the wicket at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. However, he admitted that the batters lacked intent.

“The batting let us down. We lacked a lot of intent throughout the whole innings. We were behind the game right from the get-go. Didn’t put the bowlers under enough pressure. RR adapted to the pitch much better. We were probably 40 short which is a lot in a T20 game.

“The wicket today wasn’t as good as it has been here at the Wankhede and that was a challenge in itself. Every time we tried taking an attacking option, we lost a wicket. Left us a lot to do at the back end, which we didn’t obviously do. Clearer the mind, the easier it is (to play with intent). We want guys to play free-flowing cricket. It wasn’t there today unfortunately,” Morgan said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Rahul Tripathi (36 off 26) and Dinesh Karthik (25 off 24) were the only two KKR batsmen who looked positive in the match. Opener Nitish Rana (22) and Shubman Gill (11 off 19) failed to give the 2-time champions a good start again as only 25 runs came in the Powerplay.

Sunil Narine walked in at four to give the team a much-needed momentum but could manage only 6 from 7. A terrible mix-up between Eoin Morgan and Tripathi saw the former getting run-out and departing without facing a ball.

Hard-hitting Andre Russell walked in with only 4 overs remaining and got out while trying to clear the boundary rope in the 18th over.

Brilliant death over bowling from Rajasthan restricted KKR to 133/9 in 20 overs.

Rajasthan were slow but steady in their run-chase and managed to win the game by six wickets and 7 balls remaining.
