Karnataka: Many colleges set criteria, kick off admission process – Times of India

BENGALURU: While class 12 exams are getting delayed due to the pandemic’s second wave, many top autonomous colleges in the city are kicking off their admission processes for undergraduate programmes by drafting their own criteria.

The latest to join the league is Mount Carmel College (MCC), which has decided to draw up a provisional merit list for some of its courses using aggregate of class 10 and 11 marks. Entry to some other programmes is based on entrance test as usual.

“Not only are class 12 exams and results getting delayed, but several autonomous colleges have started admissions. With this, students who have applied online also want to know the decision from our end so that they can make their choices. Hence, we have decided to start our admission process as well,” said Raghu VN, spokesperson of the college.

Jyoti Nivas College has been following a similar procedure since last year. “For state board students, we consider I PU marks and for central boards, we take both classes 10 and 11. In case a student says s/he is unhappy with class 11 results, we consider class 10 too. Apart from that, we are also open to conducting an online interview to analyse the student’s full potential. A small percentage of seats is set apart for students who want admission after their results are announced. We followed a similar format last year too. Our academic year used to begin by June first week. While it may not be possible this time, we draw up the list of candidates to start classes as soon as possible,” said Vanaja Malathy, admission in-charge of the college.

Private institutions like Christ (deemed to be university) and Jain (deemed to be university) have their own entrance tests that are under way. “We usually start our process by December 8 every year. While we have entrance tests for most programmes, we used to wait for PU results for B Com admissions. However, this year we didn’t wait because of the delay and are relying on our entrance test and interview,” said Fr Abraham VM, vice-chancellor. The university has given an option to students to write the entrance test in May and June as well. Classes will start only after class 12 results are announced.

Jain Entrance Test is being held in May and June. It has thus far received close to 6,000 applications for undergraduate programmes and around 3,400 for postgraduate ones.

St Joseph’s College is also holding entrance tests for some of its sought-after courses. “We usually conduct an entrance test for popular courses as there is a wide disparity in the marks awarded by various state boards. While some states are liberal in awarding marks, their students might not be of the same calibre as those from other states whose marks may not be so high,” said Fr Victor Lobo, principal.

“However, when the classes will start depends on class 12 exams and results. When we start, we want to conduct bridge courses for all students. Them sitting idle at home is not good for society,” he added.

Class 12 exams have been postponed for state board, CBSE and ISC. A decision on when they will be held is yet to be taken.
