In the first episode of the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen, we got a perfectly executed Digimon reference that acts as the perfect analogy for a discussion taking place in the show between Gojo and Geto.

What Does The Reference Mean?

Gojo makes a SkullGreymon reference in Jujutsu Kaisen

In episode 16 of the first Digimon series, Digimon Adventures, Digimon are able to Digivolve from their Rookie Stage to Champion and from Champion to Ultimate. Digimon will Digivolve into different forms depending on how they are raised. For the first anime series, partner Digimon tended to have a consistent Digivolution line they followed. However, this all changed when viewers saw what happened to a Digimon being mistreated.

Agumon was force-fed and pushed to become stronger so that he could reach his ultimate form, MetalGreymon. However, because of the mistreatment at the hands of his partner, he Digivolved into a monstrous Ultimate Stage called SkullGreymon. SkullGreymon was not able to be controlled by his partner and instead rampaged through any and all in its way. However, Digimon are able to revert to previous forms through the process of de-digivolution. SkullGreymon de-digivolved back to a Stage before Rookie, in the form of Koromon. Koromon would need to digivolve back into its Rookie form, Agumon, over time.

How Is It Relevant?

Koromon from Digimon

It is explained to Gojo and Geto that if Master Tengen evolves, he may become a threat to humanity due to the loss of control. This is where Gojo makes the connection of Master Tengen losing himself post-evolution would be like getting a result of SkullGreymon over MetalGreymon. Every couple hundred years, the vessel for Star Plasma is reset to prevent this evolution. So, it is as if they are de-digivolving Master Tengen so that he goes back to Koromon to prevent a potential digivolution line that would result in getting Skullgreymon.
