In honor of Valentine’s Day, Joker director Todd Phillips has revealed the first look at Lady Gaga in character in the sequel, titled Joker: Folie à Deux.
She’s believed to be playing Harley Quinn in Folie à Deux. While Joker took massive liberties with the DC villain’s source material (to say the least), if Gaga is playing Harley Quinn and if the sequel is drawing from her existing origin story, this could show their first meeting while she’s a therapist going by the name Dr. Harleen Quinzel.

Gaga officially announced her involvement in the sequel last August, revealing its title and release date – Oct. 4, 2024 – on her social media channels. While not confirming who she’s playing, the teaser video released alongside the announcement, showing her and Phoenix dancing around in a black and red silhouette (with a heart on Gaga’s cheek, no less) certainly increased speculation that she’ll be playing Harley.
Phillips has co-written the script for the sequel and will return to direct, with Phoenix reprising his role as Arthur Fleck, aka Joker. In a bit of a twist, it’s also been reported that Joker: Folie à Deux will be a musical – quite the change from the first movie’s gritty take.
The tease comes shortly after James Gunn and Peter Safran announced last month their initial plan for a revamped DCU, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Phillips’ take on the Joker, however, exists outside of the main universe that their plan is tackling, as well as Matt Reeves’ Batman trilogy.
